The mood grew a bit grimmer as David provided those updates.

He was glad to see that Azure was taking this very seriously, not that he had expected otherwise. She looked competent and lethal, decked out in her gear and small mobile armory. After he had given her all the information he could think of, and Ellie and Ashley threw in whatever helpful bits they could think of, and they’d answered, or attempted to answer, whatever questions she had, they fell silent and focused on getting back.

That continued for over two hours before David fell into a seemingly unbreakable loop of being terrified that Cait had been killed or Evie and April had been found out and recaptured or killed, or any of his other friends out there, and couldn’t handle the silence any longer.

“Azure,” he said, garnering her attention, “how have things been going for your clan?”

“Quite well, actually,” she replied. She almost looked guilty. “The lake has a healthy supply of fish and plants, which I am finally convincing them to supplement and extend by relying on land-based foods. I have been hunting. They have grown rather fond of deer. I have been training all of them to defend themselves more effectively, and I have a small team of three of the braver individuals who come with me to train to fight and hunt on land. I know that there are techniques and, well, endurance training that can be used to extend the amount of time they can operate without water. At the moment, they can safely operate without it for two hours before they begin to start losing focus. I feel bad, like I am torturing them, which I suppose I am in a way, but they’re more than willing. We were almost completely wiped out.

“Mostly I try to do the training during rainy days. As long as it is raining, they can continue to operate, and we are figuring out what kind of an extension simply drinking water can give us as opposed to being immersed in it. It’s been an...interesting time. And a blessedly peaceful one. Save for one instance where a group of bandits arrived and tried to establish themselves in that cabin so they had a nice little headquarters to rob people from, and some stalker and ripper attacks while we were on the surface, we have been very lucky.”

“That’s so good to hear, Azure,” David replied. “I’m so glad your clan is doing well.”

“I appreciate it...we appreciate everything you all have done for us. We would be dead now if not for your efforts. And we are doing all we can to rebuild.” She smiled. “Three of our number are already pregnant, and three more are trying.”

“How about you?” Ashley asked. She hesitated, then sighed. “That was a rude question, wasn’t it?” she asked, wincing.

“I do not take offense to the question from you,” Azure replied, and Ashley seemed to relax. David was surprised by how far she’d come, really how far both
